5th Grade Learns About the Dangers of Substance Abuse5th Grade Learns About the Dangers of Substance Abuse

Hermes 5th graders were taught about the perils of using drugs like tobacco and alcohol on Monday, November 18th.  Benedictine University medical student, Noah Davis, spoke to students about how smoking and drinking can affect the different organs in our bodies through the program ASAP – Adolescents Substance Abuse Program.  Noah brought in healthy and unhealthy lungs, hearts, and livers, and a healthy brain.  Students watched Noah blow up healthy lungs and unhealthy lungs and were able to see a drastic difference in oxygen intake!   Students also learned about how our liver detoxifies our blood, and how alcohol can negatively affect the liver and the detox process.  Students left the presentation with a vast amount of knowledge of these two drugs, and the power to make positive and healthy decisions for the future!

We are so grateful to physical education teacher Mrs. Arshad for bringing in this great program!  We wish future doctor Noah Davis well in his studies and we thank him for spending time with Hermes students today.
