Elementary, middle school students are reading millionairesEstudiantes de Primaria y Secundaria son millonarios de la lectura

While this school year is certainly ending in an unprecedented way, that hasn’t stopped our elementary and middle school students from becoming “millionaires” with a very impressive achievement.

Students in grades K-8 use an online reading platform called “MyON Reader” and new this year, students began using “MyON News.”

Representatives from MyON recently contacted District 131 with news that our elementary and middle school students were now “millionaires” as they reached a milestone of officially reading more than 1,000,000 minutes on MyON this school year.

MyON News is new to the district this school year and brings five daily news articles in both English and Spanish to our youngest readers (K-5). Topics come in multiple reading levels and include US and world news, sports, science, animals, arts, discovery, and kids in the news.

MyON Reader allows every student in grades K-8 a personalized digital library at their fingertips. The platform also provides MyON News, which provides authentic reporting on timely topics and current events.

MyON acknowledged that this unique achievement demonstrates that a strong community of readers is being built across East Aurora. They also shared some key statistics regarding K-8 readers in District 131:

  • 123,053 books accessed
  • 23,794 articles read
  • 1,005,118 minutes spent reading
  • 2,669,205 pages read

Christopher Carmona-Mendoza, a 5th grade student from Hermes Elementary, is just one of many students who have excelled at reading with the help of MyON. His teacher, Ms. Becky Roireau, said that Christopher has done fabulously on MyON this year.

Christopher admits that he does read a great deal, and that the MyON Reader has helped him. “The books that have no audio with them help you even more.”

Christopher’s mother, Sindi, said that Christopher loves to read, and always seems to be reading, no matter where he is.

“My two favorite series are the “I Survived” (a series by Lauren Tarshis), and “Diary of Wimpy Kid.”

Christopher especially loves fiction books and horror stories, and his favorite author of all time is Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of A Wimpy Kid.” His current book? The Buffalo Soldiers, by Anna Maria Crum.

Brad Wieher, director of literacy and interventions for District 131 said that ultimately, these milestones contribute overall to the academic success of District 131 students.

“The books and nonfiction articles our students are reading each day not only increase their background knowledge on many different worldly topics, but they are also directly connected to our district focus standards and goal of increased student achievement,” said Wieher.

“The more students read and learn, the better they become at providing textual evidence, make inferences, pointing out main idea and learning new vocabulary in the context of a story or article. I am so proud of both our students and teachers.”

Si bien este año escolar, ciertamente está terminando de una manera sin precedentes, eso no ha impedido que nuestros estudiantes de Primaria y Secundaria, se conviertan en “millonarios” con un logro muy impresionante.

Los estudiantes en los grados K-8, usan una plataforma de lectura en línea llamada “MyON Reader” y este año, los estudiantes comenzaron a usar “MyON News”.

Los representantes de MyON, contactaron recientemente al Distrito 131, con noticias de que nuestros estudiantes de Primaria y Secundaria, eran ahora “millonarios”. Ellos alcanzaron el hito, de leer oficialmente más de 1,000,000 de minutos en MyON, este año escolar.

MyON News es nuevo en el distrito este año escolar y trae cinco artículos de noticias diarias, en Inglés y Español, a nuestros lectores más jóvenes (K-5). Los temas vienen en múltiples niveles de lectura, e incluyen noticias de los Estados Unidos, del mundo, deportes, ciencia, animales, artes, descubrimientos y niños.

MyON reconoció que este logro único, demuestra que se está construyendo una comunidad sólida de lectores, en todo el este de Aurora. También, compartieron algunas estadísticas clave, con respecto a los lectores K-8, en el Distrito 131:
